W artykule przedstawiono krótki rys historyczny rozwoju maszyn prądu stałego w drugiej połowie XIX wieku. Koniec wspomnianego stulecia to okres, w którym maszyny prądu stałego osiągnęły niemalże obecny kształt. Całościowe zaprezentowanie historii wszystkich rodzajów maszyn elektrycznych jest ze zrozumiałych względów niemożliwe. Poświęcone są tej tematyce nierzadko całe prace magisterskie, doktorskie lub monografie. Tekst uzupełniono zdjęciami i opisami starych generatorów i silników znajdujących się w Instytucie Elektrotechniki Uniwersytetu Technicznego w Dreźnie.

The paper presents a short outline of the history of the development of direct-current electric machines in the second half of the 19th century. The end of that century was time when direct-current machines attained almost their present shape. That time can be divided into periods, which overlapped with themselves. An era of separate excitation machines was in the years 1851-1866. Self-excited machines with the simplest armatures were built in the years 1866-1871. Multi-circuit machines with ring and drum armatures were developed in the years 1869-1855, whereas modem direct-current machines were developed in the years 1886-1891. In that period, a theory of electric machines was developed and experimental constructions were replaced by machines, which were conceived in design houses. The paper is supplemented with photographs and descriptions of old generators and motors, which can be found in the Institute of Electrical Engineering at the Technical in Dresden. A collection of these machines is connected with the name of Ludwig Binder a professor in the field of electric machines in the years 1919-1958.
