W artykule omówiono geostrategiczne znaczenie Oceanu Indyjskiego - trzeciego pod względem wielkości zbiornika wodnego na świecie. Obszar ten, mimo że w latach zimnej wojny nieco utracił na znaczeniu, nadal jest istotny pod względem geostrategicznym. Ta ważna droga, łącząca Bliski Wschód z Afryką, południową Azją i Australią, stanowi bowiem szlak przewozu ropy naftowej oraz produktów ropopochodnych z rejonu Zatoki Perskiej i Indonezji. W artykule wskazano, w jaki sposób wymiar handlowo-polityczny w obszarze Oceanu Indyjskiego wpływa na interesy państw, a ściślej - jakie powoduje konflikty. Te zaś stają się wyzwaniami geostrategicznymi. Autorzy zwracają uwagę na trzy płaszczyzny problemów: gospodarczą, bezpieczeństwa politycznego i kulturową. Mimo że oddziaływanie tych pól napięć ma różne oblicza, znajdują się one w sferze zainteresowania nie tylko państw europejskich. Jednym z takich problemów jest walka z piractwem morskim.

The article presents geostrategic significance of the Indian Ocean - the third largest oceanic division in the world. This area, though lost some of its importance in the Cold War, is again very prominent today. A crucial route, linking the Middle East, Africa, Southern Asia and Australia, is a transport route for crude oil and petroleum derivatives from Indonesia and the Persian Gulf region. The article explains the source of commercial and political conflicts of interests in the Indian Ocean area and their relation to the geostrategic challenges. Three problem areas are considered here: economic, political security and cultural ones. The interactions between them make them important not only for Europe. One of the best examples of the above is a campaign on counteracting piracy.
