The paper is concerned with problem of increasing stability range of rotating shafts by incorporating an active method employing piezoelectric elements. It is well known that the presence of internal friction in the shaft material is responsible for loss of its stability, which is manifested by self-excited vibration that appears at certain critical rotattion speed. Piezoelectric elements, capable of generating bending moment under a voltage signal, can shift the stability threshold towards greater speed, thus enlarge the stable region of operating angular velocity of a given shaft. The concept of the method is based on measuring the current bending moment in the shaft cross-section by glued to its surface piezoelectric sensors and counteracting this moment by piezoelectric actuators working in accordance to the voltage signal transformed by appropriately designed control system. A simple velocity feedback strategy is proposed in the paper.
