Basic discussion and some nomenclature are given in the relationship to the procedures of validation and verification of computer simulation codes. The main goal of this paper is to illustrate the application of detailed experimental data to compare and validate two selected FEM codes (a problem-oriented code written by one of the authors, and the commercial program FIDAP). Both are applied to calculate natural convection in freezing water (wdth density inversion effect) in a differentially heated square-cavity. Special attention is given to the application of full field acquisition techniques in order to get a dense set of experimental data (ice/water temporal front position, ice volume fractions and local transient velocity fields) that is exact and reliable enough to be a reference standard in comparison with numerical results.
