Periodic surveys are expensive and do not provide real-time monitoring capability. The worldwide availability of the GPS signal makes it possible to develop automatic and real time monitoring deformation of large structures and earth movements. Recent advances from condor Earth Technologies can provide sub-centimeter accuracy for real-time and long term deformation monitoring. The Condor approach is based upon the processing of GPS carrier phase measurements treated as triple differences within a Kalman filter algonithm; this method allows sub-centimeter accuracy, avoiding the effects of cycle slips in a long-term project. In order to test the system, a special support system allowing general 3-D movements of a GPS antenna was designed and the raw GPS data were processed together with the same data coming from the EUREF UNPG GPS Permanent Station via the Hydra (TM) software. The experimental results show that, after a relatively short initial convergence time, sub-centimeter accuracy and a robust convergence of the system to the imposed deformation with immunity from cycle slips were obtained. Therefore the software seems to be a very powerful processing tool for a real-time and long-term GPS monitoring system in controlling dam movements, landslides, subsidence processes and other natural phenomena.
