The aim of the dissertation was the study on the possibilities of production of metal-ceramic surface layers by the use of oscillating electron beam, and to understand and describe the mechanism of their formation. The research program consisted of the choice of components, process investigation, and detailed testing of structure was also analysed by finite element method. All experiments were performed on WS6/25 electron beam welder designed and manufactured by Institute of Vacuum Technology in Warsaw. Nickel stellite - TiC surface layers over 18G2A steel surface featured high hardness and improved wear resistances were investigated by SEM, EPMA, XRD and TEM methods. Testing of the layer's structure was the prevalent part of work and yielded to reveal the mechanism of formation of the layers. Structural tests were focused onto formation of inter-phase between the matrix and the strengthening particle (common spot in composite materials technology), solidification process ongoing in the matrix, at surface layer-substrate interface, and in the heat affected zone of the substrate. On the basis of obtained results the mechanism of nickel stellite - TiC composite layer formation was proposed under conditions of surface re-melting by oscillating electron beam. The character of bond between TiC particles and nickel matrix was revealed, and technical guidelines of the process were precised.
