This paper presents the first steps of numerical modelling of pulverized-coal fired boiler furnaces. The purpose of the model is to give a three-dimensional description of the overall process in the furnace, including gas and solids flow, fuel conversion, homogenous and catalytic gas reactions and heat transfer to the furnace walls. Physical grounds and assumptions on which the model is based are given in the article, as well as the simplified algorithm of the calculations. Aerodynamically, the material in the furnace is considered as a heterogenous turbulence flow, consisting of gaseous phase (air and flue gases mixture) and solid dispersed phase (fuel and ash particles). An analysis of the processes of pulverized coal combustion and heat transfer is accomplished on the basis of results of experimental research and theoretical modelling of the solid fuel combustion. Different effects are calculated separately and balanced in iteration loops. A combination of aproaches and submodels should lead to an overall model, which sufficiently describes the phenomena occuring in the furnace.
