Modern manufacturing processes, which are realized in more complicated and changing environment, require exceptionally efficient organization and coordination of production activities. This paper concentrates on production flow control, which contains actions connected with both production planning and production plan realization. Numerous disturbances that appear in manufacturing are an obstacle to production plan realization. The main purpose of this research is to develop a method of production scheduling in presence of disturbances. The essence of the presented method brings the integration of production planning and control stages. It means that concurrently with the control decision (immediate reaction to disturbance) the production schedule for next operations is modified. Complexity of the problem and requirements of decision making in real time indicate that optimization methods are rarely applied. Therefore, in elaborated method the heuristics algorithms, which represent activities of planners and dispatchers of production system, are applied. The above method provides the basis for the development of the object oriented knowledge and data representation from domain of production flows control, which is applied in the expert system. The "paper" and "electronic" forms were proposed for knowledge acquisition from domain experts, which were used to built the knowledge base of the expert system. The developed method and expert system, which aid production flow control were verified with the use of data three production companies. The research that has been carried out confirms practical utility of the method and its implementation to computer aided production flow control in discrete manufacturing systems. Assumptions and constraints that are made in this paper show the need for further research. The transport of assembly operations should be taken into consideration. Additionally, research will include implementation of the fuzzy sets theory both at knowledge representation and reasoning as well as development of the methods for domain knowledge acquisition.
