The paper describes the passive safety of road vehicles as well as procedures and methods of vehicles examination in terms of passive safety based on results obtained by means of crash tests. Large emphasis was given on determination of passive safety in case of large truck- motor car impact. The systems which are used for reduction of live threatening injuries caused by lack of cars compatibility arising in this kind of accident are also described. Furthermore, this paper contains description of innovative conception of "active bumper". The "active bumper" is a device which will improve passive safety in case of frontal impact of a large truck with a passenger car. This device consist on moving the front bumper on particular distance forward when the control unit (CU) consider established boundary conditions as execuded. The "active bumper" therefore can be considered as an artificial elongation of deformation zone of a truck. Most significant problem concerning the design of the device is time during which the "active bumper" must be ready to absorb the impact energy. The paper contains the constructional propositions of the initiation systems. It describes the problems arising due to inertia forces of the device as well as factors excluding usage of particular initiations systems (e.g. use of seemingly most effective, but also difficult to control pyrotechnic material, which additionally produces high temperature creating hazard of ignition of flammable exploitation fluids). It appears that the most reliable would be the mechanical solution, however, it would be subjected to relative long duration of the processing, moreover this solution requires more advanced algorithms of cooperation with the control unit. In consequence, the more expansive computers with greater computing power are required.
