Piston ring should have possibility of movement in its groove to perform the sealing function properly. This is ensured by clearance fit of the ring in the groove. However, the clearance fit means that there are crevices between side surfaces of the ring and the groove (ring axial clearance) and between the back surface of the ring and the bottom of the groove (ring radial clearance). Combustion gases and oil may flow through these crevices. In production engines ring radial clearances are much bigger then axial ones so throttling action of a behind ring crevice can be neglected. But as the flow through the labyrinth is unsteady, its intensity depends not only on the flow section of throttling passages but also on the volumes of the spaces the gas flows through. Thus, the radial ring clearance that determine the volume of the behind-ring region can have significant influence on the gas flow intensity and oil consumption. Influence of the clearance between the back surface of the second compression ring and the bottom of its groove on diesel engine blowby and oil consumption was investigated experimentally. The clearance value was varied by modification of the depth of the second ring groove. Research was done using four cylinder, naturally aspirated diesel engine with displacement volume 2.4 dm3 (cylinder bore = 90 mm) and rated power 51.5 kW at 4200 rpm. Blowby flowrate was measured with the use of the AVL 442 BlowBy Meter and oil consumption was measured with the use of the AVL 403S Oil Consumption Meter. Results of the experiment show that the influence of radial clearance of the second ring in its groove on blowby and oil consumption depends on engine operation conditions and generally the clearance has higher influence on the oil consumption than on the blowby. The increase of the clearance causes the increase in oil consumption at small engine rotational speed but decrease at medium and high speed. The results allow to state that the increase of the clearance causes some decrease in blowby at small speed and full load of the engine but the effect of the clearance on blowby at other engine working conditions is ambiguous.
