The evolution of automotive propulsion system will be mainly driven by challenging and conflicting requirements of performance, environment safeguard, energy sourcing and quality. Being the technology development strongly dependent on several industrial constraints, a "steady evolution" is likely to be a more sustainable approach than a "breakthrough revolution". In such perspective the future scenario of automotive propulsion systems will be achieved, in parallel, by further enhancement of "conventional" reciprocating engines, by "best" hybrid configuration development and, finally, by fuel cells evolution, in a short-middle-long timeframe respectively. Market share of both "conventional" ICE concepts (i.e. Diesel & Gasoline) will strongly depend on external factors, like regional requirements or contingency constraints. In the case of Diesel engine, further development will be mainly focused on improving PM & NOx emissions and NVH behavior, still maintaining its remarkable breakthrough of fuel consumption and on low-end torque allowing a fun-to-drive feature. Also for hybrid powertrains Diesel engine could become a very interesting opportunity, because of its potential of further improving the fuel consumption and the fun-todrive features of hybrid systems. Another very challenging issue, for automotive OEM's, is the globalization requirement, heavily impacting their product portfolio, because of different local market scenarios: GM adopted a "Global Strategy - Local Execution" approach, both for Base engine development and in-vehicle integration.
