The modem doubling machines are adapted to producing yarn packages of precision structure which is arrived at by laying the successive coils of the yarn in precisely selected locations in the package. Instead of being superimposed in the successive layers the coils are laid so as to maintain a constant spacing selected in proportion to the diameter of the yarn. This structure requires that: źA constant ratio is maintained of the rotary speed of the package to the linear speed ofthe yarn guide (i.e. maintaining a constant winding ratio); źThe fractional part of the ratio is maintained at a value such that enough layers of the yarn are wound on the package before the coils of the next layer may begin to be superimposed on those of the previous Iayer. In the yarn doubling machine (Fig. 1) developed jointly by the Institute for Terotechnology, Branch of Textile Machinery, and the Majed Co., under a target project [1], each winding point is provided with individual drives ofthe package drive roller and yarn guide mechanism. The package and the guide mechanism are electronically coupled via the package drive roller. This permits to form not only precision packages but also free (open) or graded packages. With electronic control, the parameters of the package, i.e. the coil crossing angle and winding ratio, can be programmed to have any values.
