One of the current trends towards the modification of textile fabric properties is the proces s of grafting various polymers onto the fabrics. The changes in fibre properties depend on the type of monomer used and the grafting degree, i.e., on the amount of the new polymer added to the matrix of modified fibres. The process is effective, but it is possible that during the reaction resulting in new required properties, other irnportant properties may be deteriorated, for instance, the strength of fibres. The decrease in fibre strength during the modification process may be due to fibre degradation caused by the effects of the grafting parameters such as pH, temperature and time. During grafting the diameter of filaments is also changed as a result of the addition of a new polymer. This results in increased linear density of the modified filaments. In addition to the effect of the added polymer, the filament linear density is changed due to fibre shrinkage taking place during grafting due to the action of the process parameters. Hence the present study was aimed at the analysis of the linear density of modified polyamide filament yarn depending on the parameters of grafting such as temperature and time of the process, monomer concentration, degree of grafting and fibre shrinkage resulted from the grafting process.
