Safety of the consumer is the main aim of the re-evaluation programme of food additives which has been set up by the Commission. The top priority of evaluation is given to colours, because the results of new studies have been available since the original assessment was carried out. The re-evaluation of food additives has an effect on the food additives' legislation.
