In the paper, the concept of using artificial neural networks for object-to-camera (O-C) distance measurement using a single camera is considered and further developed. The method utilizes the effect of edge blurring that depends on the O-C distance for a given lens adjustments. Thus there exists a multidimensional, non-linear relationship (mapping) between a vector of image samples and the distance sought. Artificial neural network (ANN) is applied for approximation of the mapping. To reduce the dimensionality of the problem, the principal component analysis (PCA) and orthogonal function transfor ms are used. The derived features excite the ANN that estimates the O-C distance. Moreover, the sensitivity of the estimator to additive noise is investigated. It is demonstrated that choosing combinations of the PCA, Walsh or harmonic functions features that maximize the determinant of image samples sensitivity matrix with respect to image model parameters help reduce the noise-induced error of the O-C distance estimates. The results of analytical derivations are confirmed by numerical simulations. Experimental verification of the model of image blurring (using CCD-camera recorder images) and verification of the complete built computer vision system accuracy is presented as well. The method is suitable for real-time O-C distance determination by a single camera e.g. in application to robot navigation.
