This article presents several political factors, which influence the contemporary geopolitical situation and its development in Europe and the Baltic region. Since Poland is one of the main actors in this region, this article will outline the most probable missions and tasks to be undertaken by the Polish Navy when Poland becomes a full remember of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Taking into consideration the Navy's current tasks, structure, main components and technically outdated condition the basic problems of modernization of the Polish Navy will also be discussed.

Artykuł przedstawia czynniki polityczne, które kształtują aktualną sytuację geopolityczną w Europie oraz w regionie Morza Bałtyckiego. Podejmuje próbę określenia przeznaczenia i zadań Marynarki Wojennej RP jako pełnoprawnego członka NATO i jednego z czynników kształtowania polityki regionalnej. Uwzględniając obecne zadania, strukturę, główne siły oraz stan techniczny naszych sił morskich, stanowi głos w dyskusji dotyczącej podstawowych problemów modernizacji Marynarki Wojennej RP.
