W pracy przedstawiono powstający obecnie system nawigacji satelitarnej GALILEO, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem jego wykorzystania w aplikacjach morskich. Zaprezentowano zasady funkcjonowania systemu i jego architekturę (składniki globalne, lokalne, regionalne oraz segment użytkownika), podstawowe usługi i ich charakterystyki jakościowe oraz strukturę sygnałów nawigacyjnych. Ponadto porównano możliwości systemu GALILEO z najnowszymi rezolucjami Międzynarodowej Organizacji Morskiej IMO (International Maritime Organization) dotyczącymi nawigacji satelitarnej na morzu. Scharakteryzowano również sposób wykorzystania systemu GALILEO do wspomagania działań służb poszukiwania i ratowania (SAR - Search And Rescue).

In this paper the basic information on the global, European satellite navigation system, with the particular underlining of the maritime implementation, has been provided. The concept of the system and it's main components (global, regional and local components and users segment) were presented. Basic system services with quality characteristics and the structure of navigation signals were also described. The authors concentrated on maritime applications of the new system and presented IMO's (IMO - International Maritime Organization) performance requirements on services carried out at sea, as well as some typical services planned to be implemented in the GALILEO system itself. In particular, the Galileo system utilization and implementation in the maritime search and rescue services (SAR) were described and discussed.
