Optimal Antenna Configurations for Ship Berthing Application Based on GPS Attitude Determination

Minimization of the relative ranging error is always possible by extending the baseline length between on board antennas. However, due to structural constraint of the ship or to the resolution of the GPS carrier phase ambiguities, a smaller but precise attitude system is sometimes desired. Simulation was made on "Attitude DOP", the factor which directly indicates the influence of geometry of satellites and antenna configuration on the precision of attitude. The variation of precision with change of heading was analyzed for each configuration under different conditions. Attitude precision is compared between the configurations with 3 and 4 antennas for ship's berthing are presented.
