W artykule przedstawiono historyczne aspekty kategoryzacji jakości powietrza i stan aktualny, omawiając szczegółowo kilka bardziej popularnych formuł indeksu. Pokazano polskie doświadczenia związane z indeksowaniem jakości powietrza i prezentacją tej informacji w Internecie. Podsumowano stan prac nad ujednoliceniem postaci indeksu w Europie i zasygnalizowano możliwość wykorzystania alternatywnej formuły, na bazie wskaźników względnego ryzyka zdrowotnego.

Historical aspects of the air quality categorization and its current state were described in the paper including a detailed discussion of the selected, more popular index formulae. Polish experience in the air quality indexing and the presentation of this information in the Internet were shown. A summary of the advancement of works on the standardization of the index form in Europe was presented. The possibility of using an alternative, relative health risk factors based formula was indicated.
