The paper discusses a general knowledge concerning mercury emission from the combustion processes of solid fuels and control methods of mercury emissions from coal- fired electric utility boilers. The issue of mercury speciation from the combustion processes of different types of coal is discussed. The influence of Cl, S and Ca presence in the fuel alongside with the composition of mineral matter on mercury speciation are analyzed. The potential of reducing mercury emission through the use of fly ash is also presented.
