The proposed paper is to introduce the problem of electrical power quality in ships' networks and its connection with ship's safety. The issue of electrical energy quality on ships has seemed of utmost importance, in particular nowadays when a great progress in implementation of electric drives for ship's thrusters, propellers and other smaller drives is evident. These loads can cause enormous, indiscernible waveform distortions. The aforementioned disturbances can be hazardous for important receivers as well as electrical energy sources, especially with addition of other disturbances such as voltage and frequency variations or voltage unbalance. Some examples of the real research of a voltage quality on ships will be presented and commented on. In shorthand, the disturbances affect a whole ship, its crew, passengers and cargo safety. In the wake of the issue, the requirements of PRS and other classification societes as well as IEC standarts for ships' networks determine parameters of electrical energy, especially voltage, must not be exceeded. But there is some confusion in this matter, especiallyin the wake of the real observed waveform distortions in ship's systems. Moreover, the standarts do not specify how and when those parameters are to be controlled. Hitherto onboard measuring instruments for electric power systems are not sufficient for the present time demands as they are for measuring a few basic parameters but cannot register waveform distortions, even in basic range like respective harmonic level (albeit there are some exemptions lately).Presently, representatives of Gdynia Maritime University and Polski Rejestr Statków (Polish Register of Shipping) try to systemize their experience and solution proposals in that field. Their preliminary research and findings will be presented and commented on.
