The objective of the paper is to study the influence of turbulence on the burning rate of a mixture with different equivalent ratio at high compression ratio e = 14.5. Experiments are carried out in a rapid compression machine. Two combustion chambers with different swirling rates are employed in the present study. Spark ignition, catalytic ignition or a combination of spark and catalytic ignition is used in experiments. The temperature of the catalyst is controlled by means of special electronic device. Special inserts with orifices of different diameters are used to generate turbulence. A piston pushes the mixture through the insert and creates turbulence in the combustion chamber. Influence of turbulence on combustion of a propane-air mixture is extensively examined in special sets of experiments. Pressure records in a combustion chamber with low rotation rate showed substantial increase of the maximum rate of pressure rise under the influence of turbulence. The maximum rate of pressure rise increased linearly with concentration of propane from a lean mixture to stoichiometric composition. On the contrary pressure records in a combustion chamber with high rotation rate showed the same maximum rate of pressure rise in experiments with defferent equivalence ratio and different scale of turbulence.
