Experimental studies of the influence of an addition of water vapor and hydrogen on formation of nitrogen oxides during combustion of methane-air mixtures were curried out. The experiments were conducted in a constant volume chamber. The experimental chamber was heated in order to minimize condensation of water vapors on the chamber walls. combustion performances were evaluated on the basis of maximum combustion pressure and the rate of pressure rise. Concentration of nitrogen oxides was measured. It was found that an addition of hydrogen as well as water vapors decreases the amount of formed nitrogen oxides. The addition of water vapours is more effective then hydrogen addition, since they lower the combustion temperature. However, an addition of hydrogen lowers lean combustion limit of hydrocarbon mixtures, thus, by lowering combustion temperature, amount of nitrogen oxides also decreases.
