An experimental study of the formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons during the combustion of gaseous fuels

Basic chemical reaction pathways of formation of polycyclic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in flames, including HACA and RSFR mechanisms, are presented. Measurements of the concentrations of BaP and the sum of selected PAHs were made in laboratory scale atmosheric-pressure premixed flames of natural gas/air, natural gas/toulene/air, natural gas/oxygene/argon, natural gas/toulene/oxygen/argon. PAH axial concentration profiles in the flames studied indicate that PAHs are rapidly formed early in the flame and their concentrations decrease downstream. In the case of fuel rich flames, PAH concentrations reincrease in the postflame region. In natural gas flames doped with toulene the final PAH concentrations are higher than those in natural gas flames, especially at ... (rich mixtures). The final concentrations of PAHs reach their minimum values at excess air rations close to stoichiometric. The influence of the addition of acetylene to natural gas on PAH concentration levels was also studied. Results show that acetylene plays an important role in the processes of PAH formation in flames.
