The supply of power to the major centres of population must be assured to satisfy economic and social demands. Small-scale local generation plant, such as roof-mounted wind generators and solar panels, might play a part, but it is clear that large-scale electrical power generation will be required to supply the base load. The next generation of major power stations of any form will inevitably be built away from the major urban areas, and indeed many of the best sites are on the coast or off shore, often in very remote locations. Long transmission lines are thus inevitable, and are an indispensable component of a sustainable electricity supply in the 21st century. It is considered desirable to dispense with pylon-mounted overhead cables for electricity distribution and thus economic burial methods must be sought.
