Need and possibilities for a qality pusch within the technique of horizontal directional drilling (HDD)
Języki publikacji
Abstrakty
The use of the HDD technique shows a dramatic increase over the past decade. A steady increasing number of so called mini, midi and maxi drilling machines is being used on a wide range of works, ranging from the classical gas and oil pipes via cable-, environmental- and drainage systems to parts of major civil structures e.g. pipes for freezing. The shadow side of the increase in use is the increase in absolute number of (near) failures. Although, because of the wide variety in projects both in seize and technique, one can hardly speak from the same HDD technique, results are counted the same. Failures so become a barrier to further growth, were it merely the reluctance of insurance companies to give adequate cover for the works. A number of Dutch companies (knowledge institutes, consultants and contractors and branch organisations) embarked in good cooperation on a series of research projects, with the aim to understand, describe and find means to possible forestall the risks related with the HDD technique. In general the studies point to two major sources of risk. The first one being the way the project (from design to operation) is handled as an integrated process, the second one being the stability of the borehole in relation with the behaviour of the drilling fluid. The paper will describe in some detail a selection of the research.
