Light emitting diodes (LEDs) have been fundamental for most developments in the optoelectronics. Over many years they were indispensable as sources of nearly coherent radiation in the light-band extending from green to infrared. They were serving as indicators, displays and signal sources, respectively. However, it was not until the violet-blue LEDs have been developed that white light could be synthesized. These LEDs have led to RGB (red, green, blue) white emitting LEDs but soon turned out that it would be cheaper to generate white light by illuminating with blue light a proper phosphor. Such notion was developed just on time as it had been understood that treats brought about by CO₂ air pollution and necessity to restrict electrical energy consumption are becoming obligatory. White-emitting LEDs feature properties that allow not only for reduction of demand for electricity but also promise economical profits. Some selected topics conceming LEDs used for SSL (solid state lighting) are the subject covered by the present review.
