The growing number of different kinds of exoskeletons, most of which are experimental devices, is the main reason they do not easily subject to any classification. Additionally over 40 years of exoskeletons development showed that there are not many design solutions that could be used as templates for further comparisons among variety of devices. But most of them have one common feature - they are mechatronic devices. The presented paper describes an exoskeleton as a mechatronic system. A mechatronic design concept is also presented with a number of typical issues that are likely to be encountered during a design process with particular emphasis on safety. The recent development of embedded systems and usage of modern design tools with their influence on exoskeletons design process are pointed out.
