The requirements for brake systems are basically a high and a stable coefficient of friction at a minimum of wear. From the brake manufacturers' point of view, the prediction of performance or noise behaviour of brake systems is necessary to lower the development costs of brake pads. The current development stage of brake pads is associated with high costs due to the long brake test procedures - hence there is a need for a predictive model to forecast the brake performance already during the development stage. Based on the theory developed by Ostermeyer, dynamic friction laws can be developed and adopted in a wide field of technical applications, such as industrial brake tests. Using the example of measured time curves of the coefficient of friction, the run-in process and the characteristics after the running-in are analysed concerning the short-time and the long-time behaviour. Both characteristics are simulated by extended dynamic friction laws based on assumptions discussed below motivated by the constitution of the boundary layer.
