One of the advantages of thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS) is its capability to produce and analyse positive or negative ions. In our laboratory we had a conventional, single focussing magnetic sector field mass spectrometer, which after a radical modernization can be applied for the NTIMS or PTIMS techniques. We present this spectrometer with special reference to study isotopic composition of lithium, boron, rhenium and osmium.
