Ordered nanoporous siliceous materials can be formed via supramolecular self-assembly process. These materials found already application in adsorption and catalytic processes. Various modifications of the surface and structural properties of these materials increase their application opportunities. These modifications involve incorporation of various inorganic species and organic functional groups into the amorphous silica framework as well as attachment of these groups into siliceous pore walls. In this article we review the literature on the synthesis of modified ordered nanoporous silicas and the methods used for characterization of these materials as well as discuss their potential applications. A special emphasis is given on the adsorption studies of modified ordered mesoporous silicas, especially MCM-41 - type materials.
