Prace nad budową tunelu Gotthard Base w Szwajcarii trwają nieprzerwanie od 1998 r. Ta najdłuższa na świecie konstrukcja umożliwi połączenie kolejowe między Włochami a Szwajcarią i skróci czas podróży o ponad 2 godziny. Jego budowa jest precedensem na skalę światową, nie tylko ze względu na rekordową długość, ale też na niezwykle trudne warunki geologiczne - powstający w Alpach tunel w całości przechodzi przez skały - oraz niespotykaną dotąd w takich warunkach średnicę tarczy wiercącej, dochodzącej do 9,6 m. O budowie tunelu Gotthard pisano już wstępnie w numerze 2 (2/2004) i 6 (3/2005). Od tamtej pory poczyniono jednak ogromne postępy i dwie linie tunelu dotarły już do stacji Faido. Zależnie od występujących na danym odcinku warunków gruntowych na zmianę stosowane są zmechanizowane i tradycyjne metody górnicze.
At the heart of the new transalpine rail route is Gotthard Base Tunnel. With a length of 57 km, the world's longest tunnel should become operational at the end of 2016. This pioneering achievement of the 21st century will bring major improvements to travel and transportation systems in the heart of Europe. The railway technological facilities make possible the rail traffic in both of the rail-way tubes, and connect up the new rail track to the existing network. The installations are planned to be at the peak of technology. The construction and the technologies complement each other in creating a unique building structure. Driving in all the sections of the Gotthard Base Tunnel is progressing well. The 100 km mark has already been passed. This means that of the total length of the Gotthard Base Tunnel of more than 153 km, more than two thirds have now been excavated.
