According to the available potential a research required to develop a new technology can take 6 to 10 years. Therefore, if we ignore at the moment the weaknesses and try to protect and preserve the best of our chemical industry, we must realise that any applied research to be initiated now should undertake a challenge to supply results - that will be competitive on the scale of a global open market - within a timespan of not more than 10 years. The recent vigorous development of technology and information science, and the simultaneous progress in basic research and science, may create an illusion of the romantic atmosphere of the second half of the nineteenth century when the limits of the human brain appeared to have been the only restrictions imposed on progress. Today, however, any idea, even the brightest, if not supported by the expertise applied by many disciplines and by market analyses, and if not aided by marketing, lobbying and, first and foremost, by capital, is foredoomed to failure, that is, it will remain an elegant contribution to the ewalth of science that will enchant only a narrow milieu of experts. Today, as never before, undertaking a research activity that is intended to achieve practical significance, requires the targets to be tailored to available assets.
