A mathematical model of a quarter car semi-active suspension is presented wherein a linear magnetorheological fluid damper (MR damper) is employed as a controlled actuator. The model utilises the MR damper model modified by the authors to take into account the effects of magnetic field fluctuations. Computer simulations of the car suspension were run for various levels of the control current; the results were then verified against the measurement data. Computer simulations allowed for the designing of an on-off and hybrid controller for the suspension systems. The performance of the closed-loop system complete with the controllers was then tested at the laboratory setup.
