The work presented in this paper emphasises the modelling of the dynamic behaviour of the catenary-pantograph system. The aim of the present paper is to analyse the coupled longitudinal and transversal vibration of the railway overhead contact system taking into account the effect of locomotive vibration. Vibrating responses of locomotive roof are input as excitations to the considered system. The rail vehicle model developed in the paper consists of a continuous subsystem (the track) treated as a rigid foundation, and discrete subsystem of six degrees of freedom describing a railway vehicle. The overhead system is modelled by a finite homogeneous string suspended on rigid concentrated supports while a pantograph is represented by an oscillator moving along the string at a constant speed. The damping properties of the interaction elements as well as friction between the string and the oscillator are taken into account. The dynamic state of the investigated system is described ba a nonlinear set of coupled partial differential equations. The solution was obtained by means of integral transform and numerically. General results are illustrated by a numerical example in which the effect of the wave propagation is noticeable.
