Abstrakty
This contribution deals with the priciples of linear time-frequency analysis. Two commonly used methods, the short-time Fourier transform and the wavelet transform, based on a harmonic wavelet, are described. The short-time Fourier transform is characterised by a uniform time-frequency resolution, whereas wavelet transforms exhibit non-uniform resolution in the time-frequency domain. The effect of uniform and non-uniform resolution respectively on the time-frequency analysis is shown by means of artifical test signals. A well adapted short-time Fourier transform is well suited for vibration analysis. This is illustrated by two applications in mechanical and medical engineering.
