In September 1861, the German town of Speyr hosted the 36th Congress of German Scientists and Physicians. During the event, a Russian chemist A.M.Butlerow gave a lecture entitled: “Einiges ueber chemische Struktur der Körper”. At the same time, a Polish participant, W. Olewiński, presented his paper “Sur l’atomicité des Éléments et sur les Limites des Combinaisons chimiques”, discussing similar problems, as Butlerow. This article compares the two lectures and discusses their respective roles in the development of organic chemistry.
