His research interests include EU-Russia economic relations, energy relations in particular, the investments of Russian firms abroad, and the strategic development plans of the Russian Federation. Liuhto has been involved in several Russia-related projects funded by the European Commission, the European Parliament, the United Nations, and the World Bank.
