The heterogeneous selective liquid phase oxidation of glucose to gluconic acid over palladium supported catalysts was studied. The oxidation reaction was performed in pH range 5 to 11 in a batch reactor using 5 wt-% Pd catalysts supported on active carbon obtained from pits of plums, and on alumina and silica. Inhibition of the catalytic activity and selectivity was observed in an acidic medium. It was also found that the kind of support used, significantly influences palladium selectivity in this reaction.
