For many heavy-current components operating times of up to three decades are expected. In order to be able to make statements about the aging behaviour of these units as the manufacturer of enclosed medium-voltage indoor switchgears, artificial aging methods must be applied which accelerate aging considerably. With the IEC Test Report 60932 a guideline for the application under severe environmental conditions has existed since 1988, which facilitates a classification of switchgears regarding aging behaviour using climatic procedures of various degrees of difficulty. On behalf of a switchgear manufacturer aging tests on various enclosed medium-voltage indoor switchgears were carried out at the BTU Cottbus on the basis of this guideline. The experiences gained during these tests showed that the guideline only allows insufficient conclusions on aging behaviour. Thus requirements of a new testing concept were elaborated which, after a short introduction of the IEC 60932 R, are to be a part of this paper in connection with past experiences.
