Quality assurance tests of power cables after manufacture have become routine for a long time. Nowadays, preventive PD diagnostics of installed cables are more and more in demand in order to enhance the supply reliability. The submitted paper deals with practical experience in preventive on-site PD diagnostics of installed medium voltage (MV) and high voltage (HV) power cables. It is reported, that the conventional IEC-method can only be adopted for PD diagnostics MV cables. From an economical point of view this approach is not applicable for HV and EHV XLPE cables, because an extremely high measuring sensitivity down to the pC range is required. As an alternative only the HV power cable accessories are PD tested. This can advantageously be done by PD sensing using the VHF / UHF range.
