Abstrakty
Charging and transport properties of insulators have been investigated with a specific SEM, by measuring the Total Electron Emission Yield (secondary + backscattered electrons) as a function of the primary beam energy, dose and current density. It results that insulators can be classified into two categories: insulators exhibiting a trapping of positive and negative charges stable over a very long time (called "trapping insulators") and those in which charges in excess relax in a short time (called "conductive insulators"). All materials having a resistivity>1014 Ωcm pertain to the "trapping insulators" class and those with a resistivity <1012 Ωcm pertain to the "conductive insulators" class. The response of various ceramics to electron injection is presented in the frame of this classification.
