This paper presents prototype software for computer aided planning of manufacturing systems, where the planning is based on predetermined process plans. In the design-process of a layout, the focus has been mainly on the placement of the machine tools. Creating a complete three-dimensional model and subsequently adjusting it to the needs will ensure optimal use of the production space and elimination of long and crossing transport routes. The developed methodology may refer to designing new manufacturing systems or rebuilding the ones already in existence. Three-dimensional placement of machine tools and manufacturing equipment is a fundamental problem, influencing flexibility, efficiency and profitability of production.
