Abstrakty
A series of papers by F. Freund and his collaborators concerning the defect structure of water and/or carbon dioxide doped magnesium oxide is reviewed. The model of defect structure has been used to explain high temperature emission of water vapour, hydrogen and oxygen as well as some hydrocarbons from such preparations. According to the authors similar effects may also occur in the case of CaO or SiO<sub.2</sub> and silicates. The possibility of abiotic formation of hydrocarbons in the earth's crust is discussed.
