The influence of neotectonics on the river valleys network in Greece

The purpose of the study was to ascertain, on the example of Greece, the dependence of the valleys directions on neotectonics. The starting point for the analysis was cartometric measurements of faults and valleys in 9 testing areas. The measurements have shown that the direction of valleys in each testing area is to a smaller or larger degree dependent on the direction of neotectonic dislocation lines. A direct connection is the most pronounced in Crete and slightly weaker in Volos and Kalamata regions, where the valleys reflect the main tectonic direction. In the remaining areas the valleys usually follow the direction of the secondary fault network. In the north (Edessa, Ioannina, Kozani) the nature of the drainage is decided mostly by the relief, which however in all the three cases depends on the tectonics - the valleys reflect the alpine fold structures and neotectonic depressions. The weakest matching of directions can be seen in Drama region, in particular in the Rodope crystalline massif. In the regions of Lamia, Patras and Kalamata the valleys trend seems to depend mostly on the local tendencies of vertical movements. These valleys turn towards the relatively fastest depressing areas. There are no clear regional pattern governing the relation between the valley natwork and the tectonics of Greece. The dependence of drainage trends on fault directions is less pronounced in the currently less active northrn parts and stronger in the mobile south. A significant similarity of the analysed parameters is noted also in the region of north border of the Aegean Plate and its accompanying large, latitudinal tectonic troughs. However, in the influence of faults on the river network in Greece, local tectonic trends seem to be much more important than regional differences.
