The aim of this work is the analysis of precipitation totals and frequency in the north-west of Po-land depending on the type of atmospheric circulation. Heavy rains are of remarkable importance for agriculture, forestry, weather forecasts etc. In the north-west of Poland percentage of heavy rains in the annual total is great (nearly 41,2%) with the average annual value 7,3%. The basis for the analysis was mean daily precipitation totals for the 1961-1980 period from 185 pluviographic stations. To determine the influence of types of atmospheric circulation on rainfalls Osuchowska-KlehYs classification was used (1975). The research has shown that atmospheric circulation in seasons of the year can influence on precipitation totals and it's frequency in many ways. The most distinguishing are the types of circulation with heavy rains occurring most often (CB, A, E(0)) as well as the ones with high daily precipitation totals (E(0), CB, A). Furthermore, it should be emphasized that the same type of circulation may condition, by different means, precipitation totals due to the peculiarities of flowing air masses dependent on the season. The north-eastern and eastern cyclonic circulation (E(0)) is a good example here since, among the 13 circulation types defined by Osuchowska-Klein (1975), it is the type that most frequently causes high daily precipitation totals in the warm period of the year, which results from the advection of cold air masses towards the warmer surface. Similar effects emerge with the north-western cyclonic circulation (CB) as throughout the warmer period of the year the circulation is characterized by the onshore advection of cold air masses, while in autumn and winter it brings on warm and humid air from the ocean, along with continuous precipitation. It is worth noticing the eastern circulation during which the rainfalls > 30 occur most frequently. The reason for such heavy and prolonged rainfalls is the advection of very warm air, which leads to intense convection and evolution of thermal thunderstorms.
