High porosity metallic and nonmetallic media are engineered materials designed for special properties which can be used in many industrial applications including transportation. They have very high porosity level and are exceptionally light weight materials. Metallic foams possess unique combinations of properties such as unusual acoustic properties, altitudinous damping energy capacity, air and sometimes liquid medium permeability, low thermal conductivity and improved heat insulating characteristics. In the transportation industries, including aerospace and automotive one, the most important driving forces, are mass and cost reductions and, therefore, there is a great interest in these materials. The development of new porous structures can be a relevant challenge for materials scientists. This overview discusses manufacturing practices, structure, properties, and application of monolithic, composite, syntactic foams and gasars, some of which were produced at Foundry Research Institute (FRI) in Cracow and investigated in cooperation with Motor Transport Institute (MTI) in Warsaw. The results of mechanical properties for large amount of metallic foams produced by different techniques in relation to their density are also highlighted. New kind of porous structures can fill up the lack of properties between currently produced cellular solids and metals, alloys and metal matrix composites.
