The research results, presented in this report, stem from scientific curiosity about possible influences of inertial and cinematic approximations, commonly employed in engineering models. Piston engines, although still very widely used as a reliable driving unit, are generating essential dynamic solicitations transmitted to their environment: mounting base and driven machines. Torsional vibration of crankshaft assembly, represented by discrete undamped model, was described by a set of non-linear equations with varying coefficients. Their investigation in the time and frequency domains, enabled authors to define quantitative differences and new phenomena due to more precise modelling and modal analysis, available with Matlab+Simulink programming. Three major types of crank mechanism vibration models were investigated: - traditional non-linear, - non-linear without simplifications of cinematic relationship, - non-linear as above but with continuing connecting rod inertia distribution in its motion plane.
