Optimising stirling engine design variables using genetic algorithms

Basing on the design of the prototype Stirling engine SEPS-1, the genetic algorithms for the selection of the most suitable set of the design and control variables for that engine have been applied. The engine under investigations is a single acting engine of gamma configuration, 3-5 kW indicated power at 25 Hz operating speed, with helium as working gas of 3MPa mean pressure. The original computer program OPTYSTIR written in BORLAND DELPHI 3 language for WINDOWS 98 and the original 3rd order code for Stirling cycle calculations have been used for the purpose. The optimization has taken into account the vector of 14 free parameters-the most important for the engine working space design. The engine thermal efficiency has been chosen as the objective function. The results of calculations are compared with some earlier results for the prototype engine optimization, carried out by means of the original computer program basing on the 2nd order engine code and non-gradient optimization algorithms.
