Spray and diesel combustion studies in a specially designed single cylinder engine

In order to carry out fundamental studies of diesel combustion, a single cylinder optically accessible diesel engine has been designed and commissioned. The engine is based on a single cylinder Lister-Petter Direct Injection (DI) diesel engine. The new cylinder head has a cylindrical swirl chamber, which is connected to the main combustion chamber via an interchangeable throat for swirl control in the swirl chamber. The swirl chamber is fitted with two fused silica optical windows. The geometry of the swirl chamber is such that optical windows can be kept free from combustion deposits fouling for long period, thereby allowing optical techniques to be used with ease. The high-speed shadow graph, the two-colour method and the laser extinction method have been developed and applied to the single cylinder engine so as to study the diesel spray, combustion, and pollutant formation in the combustion chamber. Results from these measurements are presented.
